District Court Division
The Law Office of the Public Defender for East Baton Rouge Parish is seeking full-time staff attorneys to provide legal representation to indigent defendants charged with felonies and misdemeanors in the 19th Judicial District Court.
Qualified candidates must be licensed with the Louisiana State Bar Association and be in good standing.
Candidates must be team-oriented individuals who will:
- 5-10 years experience
- Handle cases from appointment of counsel through disposal of post-trial motions and filing of notice of appeal.
- Knowledge in Louisiana Statutory Criminal Law and Code of Evidence
- Communicate with, advise, and counsel clients regarding their cases.
- Conduct client visits at the office and at the jail.
- Be responsible for reviewing files and determining trial and defense strategy.
- Be responsible for the investigation and preparation of cases for court.
- Draft and prepare written pleadings appropriate to each case.
- Prepare and file writs when appropriate.
- Comply with the Louisiana Public Defender Board Trial Court Compliance Standards (LAC 22:XV. Chapter 7)
- Maintain physical/electronic files and update the Defender Database as needed with the aid of an Attorney’s assistant.
- Conduct trials (by jury or judge) when appropriate.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Chief of Trials or District Defender
